I took an "Intro to Drawing" class at my alma mater of UAH, or the University of Alabama in Huntsville, during the spring semester of 1998/99. These scanned drawings are the result.

Note: Some of these pictures have been enhanced a little with Paint Shop Pro 5's histogram equalization function, to let you see lines and shading better, but other than that, they look like what I drew. I'll put an symbol in the description if a picture has been enhanced.

Note too: I've put the nudes at the bottom of the page, so if you, your government, or your parents are offended by mild, drawn nudity, don't look at the bottom part of the page... ;-)

Note three: I plan to write descriptions and better titles, and arrange the pictures into better categories, later. I just wanted to get these pictures out where people could see them before I left on my long 4th of July weekend trip.

Under Construction

Still Lives

[Still Life 1] Assorted junk found in the art classroom, including a turtle shell, a porcelain mask, cardboard boxes draped with cloth, and a little wooden Hawaiian god (he shows up again later)
[Still Life 2] More draped cloth. This time, I tried to do a shaded drawing on a medium-dark background. I darkened the dark areas with ordinary pencil, and lightened the bright areas with a white colored pencil.
[Still Life 3] My homework assignment was to draw a still life scene at home. This scene has books, a stuffed Buzz Lightyear from Burger King supported by Tinkertoys (it doesn't stand on its own), an old plastic piggy bank of Snoopy on his doghouse, and my beloved ancient stuffed Snoopy, which is one of my oldest toys.
[Still Life 4] Assorted garden equipment, drawn in ink applied with a paintbrush.

Miscellaneous

[Blue Negative Space] Blue Negative Space Negative space around a still life. In negative space, the object is to draw the empty spaces between objects. The objects in the still life were mainly odd gardening equipment, and chairs.
Medium: paintbrush dipped in blue calligraphy ink
[Hand] Hand Homework: draw several contour drawings (that's "line drawings" in drafting lingo ;-) ) of hands and feet. Those are my hands in the picture. Unfortunately, the title I picked makes me think of George Costanza from "Seinfeld" yelling, "I gotta have hand!" ;-)
[Hawaii] Hawaii These are two different photos of the same piece. The class was assigned to draw multiple views of the same object (supplied in class), using two different media, and arranging the multiple views on the paper in a good composition. I chose a little wooden statue of some sort of god, with the word 'Hawaii' etched into the base. According to my professor, it's the best thing I ever did in that class, so that's the one I chose to hang in the little art exhibition at school, where each member of the beginning art classes at UAH picked one piece to be put on display. The upper picture is of the piece on display, and the lower picture was taken on my bedroom floor. I'm not sure what I think of it myself... I guess you don't have to know anything about art to create it... and vice-versa! ;-)
[Hawaii]
[Pulley] Pulley I did a second piece during the assignment that produced "Hawaii." Unfortunately, it didn't turn out nearly as interesting...
[Room] Room A line drawing of one of the rooms in the same building as the art class. The whole class was sent out to wander around, looking for an interesting area where we could make an interior drawing. I eventually settled for a printing shop.
[Room 2] Room 2 Another view of the same room, this time with a classmate. (digital camera)
[School] School For the last couple of weeks of class, we went outside to draw landscapes. This is the back side of the building where we held the art class, seen from outside. You can see a couple of my classmates in the lower right corner, also drawing.
[Silly] Silly We did this assignment on the last day of class. Each class member started drawing for ten minutes, then gave the drawing to the next classmate down the line, who had another ten minutes to draw more stuff consistent with what had been drawn so far. Each student got a crack at each picture, until the original student got her drawing back for ten minutes, to finish up. I started this picture by drawing a black and white beach scene, with a ringed planet and a moon in the sky, reflecting in the water. After the original drawings, things started to get really silly. When I got my picture back, I added the centaur and the UFO alien playing volleyball. On another person's picture -- a space scene -- I added the

Figures WITH Clothes! ;-)

[Teacher] Teacher A pen-and-ink sketch of the teacher holding a pole behind his head. One of the earliest figures the class drew.
[Defellus] Defellus A value drawing in pencil, of a classmate named Defellus.
[Female Standing] Stand Another classmate, in a value drawing in pencil.

Male Nudes

[Male Nude 1] This guy was at least a semi-professional, who had apparently posed for UAH art classes for several years. He pretty much walked in wearing a robe, asked the instructor where he should go, then dropped the robe, and... uhhh... there you go... ;-) The first two pictures were the earliest, when I was getting used to the idea, and trying to draw what I saw for the five minute period the teacher gave us for each drawing.
[Male Nude 3]
[Male Nude 2] The third drawing is the best, because I had a full 20 minutes to draw, and because the results finally started to look like a real person, not just the cartoon version.

Female Nudes

[Female Nude 1] A lovely young woman named (Avery?)
